The Suzuki SX4 is sister to Fiat's Sedici and offers the same balance of off-road ability with on-road refinement - and feels good to drive on the tarmac. As with the Fiat, the main gripe about the car derives from the noisy petrol engine, so the diesel would be the best choice for perky performance and decent refinement. Equipment levels are comprehensive and residual values should be good - so it makes for a good value buy, although discounts may be more substantial on the Fiat. However there are good savings from main dealers on both.

A former feature of BBC Top Gear's "Star In a Reasonably Priced Car", the Suzuki Liana is undeniably 'reasonably priced'. It also offers plenty of space and good equipment levels for the money - although the harsh ride and noisy engine let it down. The Suzuki Jimny is not a classy contender but it makes a fun entry-level off-roader which is perfect for open-top motoring. People don't buy them for their on-road refinement, power or handling - although they perform well off-road and have that "cute" look thanks to the pocket-sized proportions. The Jimny will last well and mechanicals should prove reliable, although residual values aren't brilliant. However discounts are.
